Monrovia Metropolitan Climate Resilience Project

Monrovia Metropolitan Climate Resilience Project

  • Status Under implementation
  • Date approved 19 Mar 2021 at B.28
  • Est. completion 21 Jul 2027
  • ESS Category Category B

The Liberian capital of Monrovia is particularly vulnerable to climate effects, namely sea level rise and the increased frequency of high-intensity storms. This has resulted in coastal erosion and shoreline retreat, which threatens the sustainability of ecosystem services and directly impacts Monrovians' fishery-based livelihoods.

This project will enhance the resiliency of vulnerable coastal communities to climate-induced sea-level rise by constructing coastal defence structures, developing a coastal zone management plan, and supporting livelihood diversification.
