Overview

Rising sea temperatures, cyclones and sea-level rise, together with overfishing and sedimentation, are degrading the reefs, mangroves and coastal ecosystems of Fiji's Great Sea Reef. The reef protects coasts and supports fisheries, so its decline puts the livelihoods and food security of coastal communities at risk.

The Fiji Coral Reef Resilience Project (CRR) will use a ridge-to-reef approach to build coastal resilience. It will restore mangroves and riparian forests, build living shorelines and set up a Locally Led Adaptation Fund that aims to support at least 12 community-led projects. It will create a Great Sea Reef Management Unit, a 10-year land and marine management plan and fisheries management plans for 20 community fishing grounds, and support updates to national and provincial adaptation plans. It will also help business support providers and financial institutions back reef-positive enterprises.

CRR works at landscape scale, addressing both marine and terrestrial drivers of vulnerability, and pairs direct community benefits with lasting institutional reform through the Great Sea Reef Management Unit. The Locally Led Adaptation Fund will channel finance directly to communities, supporting GCF priorities on locally led adaptation.
