Formulation and Advancement of the National Adaptation Plans Process of Egypt

Egypt’s landscapes, people, and economy are highly vulnerable to the ongoing impacts of climate change. On its northern border with the Mediterranean Sea, the country’s Nile delta is witnessing the climate change-induced impacts of erosion, inundation, and saltwater intrusion due to sea level rise, impacting its fertile agricultural land, coastal cities with high population density, tourism industry, ports and transport networks, etc. National development across sectors is challenged by the increasing frequency, intensity and magnitude of extreme weather events such as heat waves, flash floods, and heavy precipitation as well as sand and dust storms. These impacts are compounding the related challenges of declining freshwater availability, steady population growth, and rapid urbanization. Egypt‘s ability to respond to these impacts is challenged by low technical capacity for adaptation planning and limited information on climate risks and vulnerabilities.

To address climate change risk in the mid- and long-term, catalyze investment in climate change adaptation (CCA), and build on policy and capacity building efforts already underway, the Government of Egypt began a National Adaptation Planning (NAP) process in May of 2015, which resulted in a roadmap for advancing adaptation planning to advance the process further. The Government of Egypt seeks the support from the GCF to advance the development of a NAP with the goal of decreasing vulnerability to climate change. This NAP process will help Egypt build climate resilience by improving institutional and technical capacity for CCA planning, examining climate risks, determining CCA priorities, integrating CCA into national and sectoral planning and budgeting, and increasing investment in adaptation actions.
