Climate Resilience in the Guiriko Region
Climate Resilience in the Guiriko Region
Climate change has hit Burkina Faso’s agriculture sector in recent years, as the country relies heavily on rainfed farming for staple crops like millet, sorghum, and maize. Rising temperatures, delayed rainy seasons, erratic rainfall, frequent droughts and floods have reduced yields and shortened growing cycles. With over 80 per cent of the population dependent on agriculture, these climate stresses threaten food security, household incomes, and rural livelihoods. The Guiriko region of western Burkina Faso will likely face rising temperatures, more frequent and intense rainfall and flooding, and longer and harsher droughts.
To address these challenges, this project will enhance the resilience of rural producers in Guiriko through a sustainable land management approach, building on successful initiatives previously implemented in the country. By strengthening the region's institutional, financial and knowledge systems, producers will have greater access to affordable finance and climate information services, and local governments will find it easier to integrate adaptation into long-term development plans. Direct field-level interventions will empower local producers to use sustainable agricultural, livestock, forestry and water management practices, and by restoring and protecting ecosystems, Guiriko will be reinforced to face future climate risks.
The project will catalyse a paradigm shift toward long-term, resilient, and sustainable land management by improving local regulatory frameworks, expanding access to climate finance, and fostering knowledge sharing.
