Bangladesh is experiencing an increasing frequency and intensity of drought in its flat and low-lying northwestern region (NWR), an important agricultural hub in the country. More than 60% of the population in the region are small, marginal farmers and agricultural labourers that will struggle economically as the window of the drought season keeps expanding. Many of the residents in the region already suffer from food and nutritional deficiency caused by the prolonged drought-periods that have been steadily increasing over the past 30 years.

The objective of the ECCCP-Drought project is to make the NWR region of Bangladesh less vulnerable to climate change-induced drought while promoting the sustainable use of the region’s scarce water resources. The project achieves this by improving local institutional and technical capacities for the improvement of water planning and governance. In addition to this, the project will provide much needed infrastructure maintenance and provide more water access point for drinking purposes to reduce the burden of women in the region.

GCF signs six new project agreements after 36th Board meeting

24 Jul 2023 / Six project agreements for climate action were signed by the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and its partners on the margins of GCF’s 36th Board meeting (10-13 July 2023), a record number for the Fund. Out of 12 projects formally approved at GCF’s 36th Board meeting, six project agreements, or Funding Activity Agreements (FAAs), have been signed just days later, demonstrating the Fund’s increasing speed in moving projects from approval to implementation on the ground.
