Overview

Fiji's watersheds are under increasing pressure as forest loss drives soil erosion, flooding, and ecosystem degradation, weakening the ecosystem services that protect communities and support livelihoods.

The Fiji FLR project will help the country shift to an integrated, risk-informed “Ridge-to-Reef” approach across three outcomes: strengthened landscape governance through improved policies, regulations, and institutional coordination; increased climate resilience of local communities through climate-adaptive forest management, with additional benefits of mitigation and food security; and expanded access to finance and private sector investments to support the long-term sustainability and scaling of nature-based solutions.

The project is expected to increase the climate resilience of 196,877 people directly, and benefit 149,715 indirectly, while restoring and sustainably managing more than 80,000 hectares of forest and agricultural landscapes. It is also projected to remove around six million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent over a twenty-year lifespan, adding mitigation benefits to adaptation and food-security gains.

Implemented by FAO, in partnership with the Government of Fiji and key forestry sector stakeholders, the project is designed around strong community and Indigenous Peoples' engagement.  It advances GCF's commitment to paradigm-shifting, nature-based adaptation and mitigation solutions while supporting its strategic priorities on ecosystems, food systems, and access to green finance.
