Overview

The Fonds d’Intervention pour l’Environnement (FIE) is a national direct access entity, headquartered in Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, established by the government as a financial mechanism to address the country’s environmental challenges and climate change priorities FIE collaborates directly with local communities, particularly in six key regions, despite operational constraints in the East and Sahel due to security concerns.

FIE plays a pivotal role in mobilizing domestic and international finance to support sustainable natural resource management, climate resilience, and the green economy, contributing directly to poverty reduction, job creation, and environmental protection. Aligned with Burkina Faso’s nationally determined contribution (NDC), FIE channels resources toward local development through innovative environmental and climate-related initiatives to bridge the climate finance gap identified by the government.

In partnership with GCF, FIE’s engagement with smallholder farmers and micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) positions it as a catalyst for greening financial institutions and developing innovative financial products to accelerate climate action and inclusive green growth, particularly in the areas of forests and land use, ecosystems and ecosystem services, and health and well-being.
