St. Kitts and Nevis Climate Smart Agriculture Project (SKN CSA-P)

Food insecurity in the twin-island federation of St Kitts and Nevis (SKN) has reached unprecedented levels, largely attributed to a 13% decline in precipitation during the critical July-December growing season over the past three decades. This decline underscores the urgent need to address longstanding barriers hindering the agriculture sector’s transition to a climate-resilient, low-carbon development model. These barriers include a disjointed policy landscape for agriculture, as well as limited access to climate-smart agriculture (CSA) technologies and training for farmers and vulnerable groups. Therefore, the St. Kitts and Nevis Climate Smart Agriculture Project (SKN CSA-P) aims to revamp the sector through: (1) Strengthened enabling environment for climate smart agriculture (CSA) at national, community and farm levels; (2) Strengthened Decision Support System (DSS) for CSA at national, community and farm levels; (3) Low carbon, climate resilient agricultural practices mainstreamed at community and farms levels; and (4) Enhanced knowledge management for CSA at national, community and farm levels. However, to kickstart this transformative endeavor, support from the Green Climate Fund (GCF) through the Project Preparation Facility (PPF) is crucial. This support will facilitate essential feasibility studies, conduct environmental, social, and gender assessments, develop project-level indicators, and undertake other preparatory activities necessary to design a technically and financially viable Funding Proposal.
