Building capacities to ensure participatory engagement of indigenous and rural women in transformative gender-inclusive climate change adaptation and mitigation processes in Guatemala

The Government of Guatemala (GoG) has made significant progress in catalyzing institutional leadership in response to gender and climate-related challenges, including through a Strategy for Incorporating Gender Considerations in Climate Change in Support of the Nationally Determined Contribution. Despite this progress, the NDA has identified Readiness activities that address remaining gaps and help strengthen the capacities of key actors in mainstreaming gender-responsive climate actions and finance. Insufficient institutional capacity, limited engagement of the private sector and limited availability of gender-related data relevant to climate change in Guatemala thus poses significant challenges in strengthening the participation and empowerment of women in the development of the rural areas. These challenges hinder the processes of conducting meaningful gender-responsive adaptation finance and planning, both nationally and locally.

The goal of the Readiness proposal is to overcome these barriers by strengthening the capacity of key actors in the government and private sectors to effectively integrate gender-responsive planning, implementation and investing in climate change adaptation projects in the agriculture sector and/or rural areas. In parallel, the proposal will enable the meaningful participation of rural and indigenous women in decision-making processes for project formulation and implementation and strengthen the skills of women-led micro- small- and medium sized enterprises (MSMEs) to access climate finance and build resilience.
