GCF in Tajikistan: Modernising hydropower dams
29 Jun 2026
Hydropower generates around 98 per cent of Tajikistan's electricity, but climate change is putting this vital energy source at increasing risk.
As glaciers retreat and weather patterns become more unpredictable, the country's aging hydropower infrastructure must adapt to withstand more frequent floods and changing river flows.
GCF, EBRD, the Government of Tajikistan, and other partners have modernised critical hydropower facilities, strengthening climate risk management, and enhancing regional cooperation on shared water resources.
By strengthening infrastructure and institutions, the project has helped safeguard energy security and support climate-resilient development for decades to come.
