Ensuring rivers flow through community-led restoration

Mexico’s Huichichila River runs too hard in the rains and nearly disappears in the dry months. It’s a river out of rhythm with the land it moves through. Decades of clearing for cattle and crops stripped its banks of forest and loosened its soils. For a landscape worn this thin, a changing climate becomes a multiplier of risks: deeper floods, longer droughts, harvests that fail more often than they used to.

The recovery begins in a nursery run by women. Through RIOS — a project led by FMCN with GCF financing — they raise native seedlings that will again anchor the riverbanks, while community brigades track the water, soil, and wildlife returning to it.

None of it stands alone. The effort is woven into Mexico’s own climate agenda, backed by national institutions working to make river restoration part of how the country adapts. Building on successes, the project develops a model it can carry to restore Mexico’s watersheds.
