REDD+ results-based payments pilot
Beginning October 2017, GCF has started to pilot REDD+ results-based payments, consistent with the Warsaw Framework for REDD+ and other REDD+ decisions under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). Countries that have completed the first two phases of REDD+ for results generated from the end of 2013 to the end of 2018 are eligible to apply for phase 3 funding through this pilot programme. This request for proposals runs from the end of 2017 until the last GCF Board meeting in 2022.

The Green Climate Fund is continuing to conduct consultations seeking feedback from all relevant stakeholders soliciting their inputs for a potential follow-up request for proposals on REDD+ results-based payments.
The consultations offered concerned organizations and stakeholders from a broad range of developing and developed countries the opportunity to provide input into a potential new request for proposals supporting REDD+, which stands for “reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation and the role of conservation, sustainable management of forests and enhancement of forest carbon stocks in developing countries.”
The pilot phase of the request for proposals for REDD+ results-based payments ran from 2017 to 2022. However, the funding for this pilot phase was exhausted by the end of 2020. At its 25th meeting in 2020, the GCF Board requested the GCF Secretariat to “undertake a further analysis of alternatives for the continuation of the implementation of REDD-plus results-based payments during 2020, taking into account the lessons learned.”
The objective of these consultations included drawing lessons from the experiences of the pilot programme with a view to further improving and refining the pilot phase terms of reference and ensuring effective and efficient long-term forest-based climate mitigation. These lessons learned were instrumental in the development of the recent B.40 approved policy.
