Overview
The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) is a government body responsible for coordinating environmental management activities and supporting the implementation of environmental policies and programmes in the United Republic of Tanzania. NEMC promotes sustainable development and combines environmental regulation with programme and project management.
NEMC supports climate action through environmental governance, ecosystem-based adaptation, climate policy implementation and management of climate finance programmes. NEMC’s portfolio includes climate-resilient livelihoods, food security, ecosystem restoration, locally led adaptation, chemical pollution reduction and resilient water infrastructure. NEMC’s strategic priorities align with Tanzania's nationally determined contribution and national adaptation planning, including climate-smart agriculture, forest and wildlife protection and resilient water systems.
Building on its national environmental mandate and experience in managing adaptation projects, NEMC links climate finance with Tanzania’s environmental management and natural-resource priorities. Its combined regulatory and implementation functions provide a basis for integrating climate considerations into planning and project delivery. Through partnership with GCF, NEMC aims to advance country-driven climate action and channel finance towards vulnerable communities and ecosystems.
