The Banque Nationale de Développement Agricole (BNDA) is Mali’s national development bank, established in 1981 to support the country’s economic and rural development. Headquartered in Bamako with 47 branches nationwide, BNDA focuses on financing agriculture, forestry, fisheries, rural crafts, housing, and agro-industries. It is a public limited company with major shareholders including the Government of Mali, Agence Française de Développement (AFD), and Deutsche Investitions- und Entwicklungsgesellschaft (DEG). BNDA provides financial and technical services that empower micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) and cooperatives across rural areas. Its strategic alignment with Mali’s national climate and development policies underscores its commitment to sustainable economic growth and climate resilience.
BNDA channels resources to vulnerable communities and promotes climate-smart agriculture and renewable energy projects. With a strong track record in managing concessional loans and grants from international partners, BNDA demonstrates expertise in climate adaptation and mitigation efforts, including sustainable farming practices and energy transition initiatives. The bank’s operational capacity and its robust Environmental and Social Management System (ESMS) ensure that projects comply with international standards and deliver measurable environmental benefits. BNDA’s approach emphasizes inclusive growth by targeting women, youth, and underserved communities through specialized financing and capacity-building programs.
By partnering with GCF, BNDA leverages its technical and financial capabilities to implement transformative climate initiatives that align with Mali’s nationally determined contributions and the National Renewable Energy Action Plan. Its dedication to fostering resilience and sustainability in rural communities positions BNDA as a vital actor in achieving both national and global climate goals.
