Structured Dialogue with Eastern Europe and Central Asia

The GCF Structured Dialogue with Eastern Europe and Central Asia took place in Dushanbe, Tajikistan on 11-14 September 2018.
The fourteen countries that make up the regions of Eastern Europe, Caucasus and Central Asia are all affected by climate change, which manifests itself through extreme weather events such as floods in the Western Balkan countries or long droughts in parts of Central Asia. Additionally, aging infrastructure leading to energy inefficiency, and high levels of inequality and vulnerability are further compounding these challenges. These effects are not only pervasive, but also likely to intensify. The region's ability to access the necessary resources to address these issues will be crucial in minimising the social and economic challenges brought on by climate change, as well as to contribute to a low-emission pathway to development.
The GCF Structured Dialogue with Eastern Europe and Central Asia sought to enhance countries' understanding of the opportunities that exist to engage with the Green Climate Fund (GCF). It provided a platform for countries to exchange knowledge and experiences in accessing GCF through its diverse support programmes and funding modalities. It also provided clarity on the value-added of GCF vis-à-vis other partners who are active in the region. The Dialogue likewise facilitated interactions and discussions on potential project pipelines at the national and regional levels.
The event grought together GCF partners from Eastern Europe and Central Asia, including Accredited Entities (AEs), nominated entities, delivery partners and implementing entities, as well as other stakeholders such as national and regional governmental organisations, private sector organisations, CSOs, and other interested partners. The first day of the event was a High-Level Day, and provided a platform for ministers and other senior policy-makers to exchange experiences on tackling climate change issues and developing climate change adaptation and mitigation investments in their respective countries. Furthermore, the countries were given an opportunity to showcase the areas of strategic engagement with GCF to address their climate needs and financial gaps.
