Climate change is showing its impact in Bosnia and Herzegovina through higher average yearly temperatures and significant shifts in seasons and rainfall patterns. This has led to a rise in destructive floods, causing damage to infrastructure, agriculture, and livelihoods. Currently, 26 per cent of the population in Bosnia and Herzegovina is highly vulnerable to these floods. To cope with the escalating risks of climate-induced flooding, the country needs to move towards a proactive approach that makes use of climate data to target its adaptive strategies and ensure the most effective response. 

The “Scaling up climate resilient flood risk management in Bosnia and Herzegovina” project aims to tackle flood vulnerability by establishing an integrated, innovative and gender-responsive climate-resilient flood risk management (FRM) approach to help the country adapt to the changing climate. This initiative will bolster the country’s ability to implement long-term strategies for flood risk management by enhancing the use of climate data, flood forecasting, early warning services, and emergency response mechanisms. This will enable the population of Bosnia and Herzegovina to reduce climate related loss and damage preemptively in accordance with the “Early Warnings for All (EW4ALL)” initiative announced by the UN Secretary-General in March 2023.
