The Green Climate Fund (GCF) mourns the loss of Daniel Machado da Fonseca, GCF Board member and Head of the Climate Action Division, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil who passed away on 3 March 2024. 

On behalf of the GCF Board, the Co-Chairs, Milagros De Camps German and Sarah Metcalf extend their deepest condolences to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

After consultation with Daniel’s colleagues in Brazil, their wishes are that the GCF 38th Board meeting scheduled on 4-7 March in Kigali, Rwanda continues in the spirit of Daniel’s commitment to climate action.

Allowing for a day of mourning, Board activities will be cancelled on 4 March. The official GCF Board Meeting will convene on 5 March where there will be a ceremony to honour Daniel’s life, his legacy as a defender of climate- vulnerable communities and in promoting global climate action.
