REDD+ Readiness Preparation in Cuba

Cuba will use this GCF readiness grant to complete and consolidate REDD+ preparation activities in the following way:

  • Developing a robust NFMS with institutional frameworks for data generation and reporting, considering the role of men and women.
  • Adopting a national interpretation of the Cancun safeguards and requirements for a robust SIS.
  • Preparing a Forest Reference (Emissions) Level (FREL/FRL) with methodological protocols for remote and terrestrial data collection.
  • Developing a Climate Action Plan for the Forestry Sector that sets national priorities for REDD+, with a gender approach.
  • Elaborating a concept note (CN) based on Cuba’s priorities for REDD+, as identified in the Climate Action Plan for the Forestry Sector.
  • Increasing access to knowledge on REDD+ by disseminating REDD+ priorities among key stakeholders of the forestry sector, and systematizing lessons learned and best practices for REDD+ in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC).

This Readiness grant will consider the gender strategy of the Cuban Ministry of Agriculture (MINAG), which aligns with international and national agreements on gender equality and women's empowerment.  Moreover, the Federation of Cuban Women (FMC) will be an advisor for integrating gender actions or indicators in elaborating strategic documents.
